1.) Getting relaxed: Nothing soothes and calms you more than drinking a warm cup of tea! I love the "Sleepytime Vanilla" tea by Celestial Seasonings. I got mine at Whole Foods Market. BUT make sure you do this no sooner than 1 hour before bed. There's nothing worse than getting yourself situated and semi-comfortable and then having to get up and use the bathroom! Remembering this rule will help decrease that urge.
2.) Soothing lower back ache: Before bed each night, I will go ahead and heat up one of my corn bags (you can always use a rice bag or an electric heating pad) and keep heat on your back for about 20 minutes. This will help relax your tired back muscles. Shortly after, I will go ahead and do some back stretches. (see below, these are my favorite) When I'm finished stretching, I will put heat on again for about 10 minutes and then put it away. Another option is taking a warm bath. I'll do that at least twice a week just make sure the water isn't too hot. Its not good for you and the baby and an easy way to tell if its too hot is if your skin turns red.
3.) Free your mind: Let go of the day and what you still have to do. I know, its hard when we are in that "nesting" phase and are trying to make sure everything is taken care of before baby comes but you need your rest. Easiest way to do this is to sit in bed, and write down everything that's on your mind. Whether its how you're feeling, or a list of things you still need to do, getting it off your chest and mind will allow you to sleep much better! (**You can do this while heating your back**)
4.) Getting ready for bed: As you have probably figured out by now, pillows are your best friend! I own the "boppy full-body pillow" and it has really helped with my comfort level and back pain. If you don't have one or have the means, its an easy fix. Just grab 2 extra pillows, one for your head and one for between your knees. It'll help keep your back aligned and reduce lower back pain. If you like sleeping with two head pillows like myself make sure one is a little flatter. Otherwise you could be adding neck stiffness to your already aching body.
I hope these tips help you!
xoxo,
Alex
